Trace Noise Test

This test applies to the following models:

N991xA/B, N995xA:

  • Test S21 if Option 210 is installed
  • Test S12 if Option 211 is installed.

N992xA:

  • Always test S21.
  • Test S12 if Option 211 is installed.

This test measures the stability of the Source/Receiver system. Trace noise is largely caused by FM-to-AM and PM-to-AM conversions in the receivers resulting from digital noise in ADC conversions and phase lock loop stability/performance in the receiver frequency conversion and the source. Since the standard deviation can be defined as the RMS about a zero mean, trace noise can be measured as the standard deviation of S21 and S12 traces. Measurements are made at individual CW frequencies.

  • Only a single representative model will be shown.
  • Some illustrations may differ than those in TME.
  • For procedures that apply to multiple ports, illustrations will show the setup on only one test port.
