When you run the System Configuration wizard, you set the waveform data direction (capture or playback), configure the system hardware connections, and save hardware connections for later use. The system Configuration wizard gives you a choice of three basic configurations:
Capture (N5102A digital signal interface module to N5101A PCI card)
To create a new configuration for capture, perform the following steps:
Select System > Run system configuration wizard.
Select Capture > Next.
Select N5101A PCI Card + N5102A Signal Interface module > Next.
Select <New> > Next.
Select the serial number for the desired N5101A PCI card. If you have one PCI card, only one serial number will show. Click Next.
The wizard will check for DRAM on the PCI card. If an error message appears, see Troubleshooting. Otherwise, click Next.
The wizard will check for connectivity between the N5101A PCI card and the N5102A Digital Signal Interface Module. If an error message appears, see Troubleshooting. Otherwise, click Next.
Name your new configuration. You can use this configuration in future setups that use the same hardware components (naming tips). Click Finish.
When you select a hardware connection, the list of saved connections you see depends on the current mode of operation. In capture and digital playback modes, the list will display all saved connections between N5101A PCI cards and N5102A digital signal interface modules. In RF playback mode, the list will display all saved connections between N5101A PCI cards and ESGs or PSGs. When you save a new hardware connection, it is best to name it to match the hardware used, not the data flow direction (for example,"PCI card1-module1", not "capture1"), because the new configuration will be listed for any compatible mode of operation.
To select a previously saved system configuration or to set up a new connection for capture, perform the following steps:
Select System > Change hardware connections.
Choose a configuration from the list or select <New>, then click Next.
To enable or disable the System Configuration welcome that appears when you start the software, go to Tools > Options.
Digital Playback (N5101A PCI card to N5102A digital signal interface module)
To create a new configuration for digital playback through an N5102A digital signal interface module, perform the following steps:
Select System > Run system configuration wizard.
Select Playback > Next.
Select N5101A PCI Card + N5102A Signal Interface module > Next.
Select <New> > Next.
Select the serial number for the desired N5101A PCI card. If you have one PCI card, only one serial number will show. Click Next.

RF Playback (N5101A PCI card to ESG/PSG)
To create a new configuration for digital playback through an ESG or PSG, perform the following steps:
Select System > Run system configuration wizard.
Select Playback > Next.
Select N5101A PCI Card + ESG/PSG Signal Generator > Next.
Select <New> > Next.
Select the serial number for the desired N5101A PCI card. If you have one PCI card, only one serial number will show. Click Next.
The wizard will check for DRAM on the PCI card. If an error message appears, see Troubleshooting. Otherwise, click Next.
Select the type of connection between the N5101A PCI
card and the ESG/PSG. You can choose LAN or GPIB, and you can manually
configure the connection or select from a list of preconfigured interfaces
in the IO Libraries. Click the Test
I/O Connection
button. If the connection passes, click Next.
If the connection fails, see Troubleshooting.
Note: This connection is used to remotely configure the signal
generator. Transmission of waveform data occurs through the digital bus
connection.
