Moving a Transportable License

A transportable license can be moved from one instrument to another up to 10 times per month, but can be used on only one instrument at a time. This topic describes two methods for moving a transportable license between instruments.

Transporting a license requires the Keysight License Manager 5 (KLM5) software. If you do not have KLM5 installed on your PC, download it from the following website: www.keysight.com/find/KLM5.

Instruments Connected to the Internet (Recommended)

  1. Make sure the source (currently licensed) instrument, the target instrument, and PC are connected to a LAN with Internet access.

  2. On your PC, use the KLM5 software to move the transportable license between instruments. Refer to the KLM5 help for specific instructions.

Instruments Not Connected to the Internet

  1. Configure a direct LAN connection between the PC and source (currently licensed) instrument. At this point, the PC does not require an Internet connection.

  2. Open the KLM5 software.

  3. Delete the transportable license from the source instrument Refer to the KLM5 help for specific instructions.

  4. A Transport License dialog box appears. In the dialog box, save the license contents to a file with a .url extension (for redemption later).

If you do not immediately save the license contents to a file, you can later retrieve the license contents in the Application Category of the Windows Event Viewer and use the contents for re-issue on the Keysight Software License Transportation web page: www.keysight.com/find/transportlicense.

  5. Skip this step if your PC is connected to the Internet.

    1. Copy the .url file you created in the previous step to a portable mass storage device, such as a USB flash drive.

    2. Connect the portable mass storage device to a PC that is connected to the Internet.

  6. From Windows Explorer, locate and double-click the .url file on the PC (or portable mass storage device). The .url file appears in a browser that is connected to the Keysight Software License Transportation web page. The fields automatically update with the license contents.

  7. Enter the target instrument's hostid (model number, serial number) and then click the Submit button. A link to the re-issued license is displayed.

  8. Right-click the link and select Save Target As. Save the license file to a location on your PC (or portable mass storage device).

  9. Configure a direct LAN connection between the PC and target instrument.

  10. Skip this step if your PC is connected to the Internet.

    1. Connect the portable mass storage device to the PC that is connected to the target instrument.

  11. Open the KLM5 software and select the target system in the tree view.

  12. From Windows Explorer, locate the license file and drag (or copy and paste) it into KLM5's tree view.
