Welcome to Keysight IO Monitor

This version of the IO Libraries Suite supports Windows and Linux. Available utilities, APIs, help files and features vary by operating system. Variations are flagged in help with these icons:  for Windows and for Linux.

IO Monitor is a utility that traces messages generated by Keysight's IO Libraries:

  • VISA
  • SICL
  • VISA COM
  • IVI-COM instrument drivers released after September 18, 2010
  • Internal Processes (messages generated during the Discovery process)

These I/O and instrument driver messages can be used to analyze communication between test & measurement instruments and the controller PC.

IO Monitor Quick Start

If you have one or more instruments connected to your PC and these instruments are recognized in Keysight's Connection Expert, you can begin using IO Monitor in just a few simple steps:

  1. Start IO Monitor. From the Keysight IO Control icon, select Utilities > IO Monitor.
  2. On the IO Monitor screen, select the Start Capturing Messages button.
  3. Click the Refresh button in Connection Expert. Watch as the I/O messages generated by the refresh operation appear on the IO Monitor display.
  4. When finished, click the Stop Capturing Messages button on the IO Monitor display.

IO Monitor is that easy to use. Click a link below to learn about other features that make IO Monitor an excellent utility for monitoring and troubleshooting instrument I/O in your test and measurement  programs.

Important Considerations

  • IO Monitor is not a performance measuring tool, because the IO Monitor itself affects performance.
  • Only one session of IO Monitor can run at any time per machine.
  • IO Monitor should only be used when one user is logged in.
  • When monitoring for long periods of time when message volume is high, IO Monitor may lose messages.
  • When monitoring SICL and/or SICL Detail, IO Monitor may monitor, display, and/or log many messages from the Keysight Instrument Discovery Service. To reduce the number of messages, turn off the SICL and SICL Detail options. See Changing IO Monitor Settings for details.

Keysight IO Libraries Suite Documentation

You can view additional documentation for the Keysight IO Libraries Suite by selecting Documentation from the IO Control (click in the taskbar; typically bottom right in Windows and upper right in Linux) or from within each program and utility that has help.
