Distortion

This test measures the third-order intermodulation distortion of the instrument and verifies that it meets the published specifications. Two signal sources are required and are provided by a signal generator and a swept signal generator. The outputs from the sources are combined through a directional bridge, used for isolation, and applied to the VSA. Using a power meter, the amplitude of the source signal is measured as a reference for the rest of the test.

With the source frequencies set 50 kHz apart, the upper and lower distortion products are measured. Then with the source frequencies set 5 MHz apart, the upper and lower distortion products are measured again. The highest amplitude product from each pair of measurements is compared to the specification for the instrument.
