Add/Edit New Instrument Address Dialog Box

Menu Path: Utilities > Hardware > Instrument Manager > Add or Edit button

The Add/Edit New Instrument Address dialog box is used to configure instrument connections within the VSA software.

Set Protocol

Select a LAN Local Area Network: A communications network that serves users within a local geographical area, typically over distances of around 100m. Wireless LANs use wireless communicaitons to network devices so there is no need for data cabling. protocol for a new or existing instrument.

VXI-11 - Sets VXI-11 as the LAN protocol for a new or existing instrument. Use the Remote Name field to the right of the VXI-11 radio button to enter the LAN device name.

HiSLIP - Sets HiSLIP as the LAN protocol for a new or existing instrument. Use the Remote Name field to the right of the HiSLIP radio button to enter the LAN device name.

Custom LAN - Specifies a custom LAN protocol using the Custom Model drop-down list to the right of the Custom LAN radio button. Available Custom LAN protocols are:

Set LAN Address

Hostname or IP Internet Protocol: A set of instructions defining how information is handled as it travels between systems across the Internet. Address - A LAN connection can be defined using a hostname or an IP address.

Use a hostname when your network is set up to use DHCP to dynamically assign an IP address at the time each PC or logic analyzer starts up or restarts. This requires that your network have a DNS (domain name system) server to provide the DHCP service and map the hostname to an IP address.

Use the device IP address when your system uses static IP addressing rather than dynamically-assigned IP addressing using DHCP. In this case, the device will have a static IP address that does not change over time (or at startup). This is likely to be the case if a private LAN is being used for your test system.

Port - (Custom LAN protocol only) If applicable, enter the port number of the instrument. Enter '-1' if there is no port number.

Name the Instrument (Optional)

Name - Enter a unique name to help distinguish this instrument from other instruments in the Instrument Manager list.

Instrument Discovery

Ignored - Check this box to ignore the selected instrument during discovery instead of deleting it from the list. Ignoring an instrument is useful if you don't need it for the current measurement but want to keep its connection for future use. Ignoring instruments can speed up the startup process since the VSA software won’t try discovering ignored instruments. This can be especially helpful if an instrument is currently offline or not physically connected to the computer that VSA is running on.

You can also change the Ignored status by right-clicking the instrument in the Instrument Manager list.

An instrument's Ignored status is also shown in the Instrument Manager's Properties panel as True or False, and an "Ignored during instrument discovery" icon is displayed next to an instrument when Ignored status is enabled (True).
