Powering the PXB On and Off

The following section describes procedures for Windows XP. Refer to the Windows 7 Help and Support to perform equivalent operating system tasks under Windows 7.

During boot up of MS Windows or of the PXB firmware, do not press keys on the front panel, rotate the RPG knob, or connect a USB device. Doing so may lead to a front panel lockup state. Wait until the firmware is running and all activity has stopped for at least one minute.

On Mode

To turn on the PXB, briefly press the Power button. The Power LED will change from yellow to green when power is on.

Power Scheme

The instrument is sent from the factory with the following Power Option Properties: The monitor is set to shut off after 1 hour of inactivity, the hard disk drive (HDD) is set to shut off after 3 minutes of inactivity, and System standby is set for Never. The PXB does not support the MS Windows Standby or Hibernate modes.

To prolong the life of your PXB's HDD, Agilent recommends that you leave the Power Options settings at their default values.

Shutdown Mode

In Shutdown mode, the current instrument state is not automatically saved before the PXB is powered off. When the PXB is again powered on, a full system boot up is performed, and the PXB powers up in the preset settings. A password is required to resume operation after being in Shutdown mode. The Power LED will change from green to yellow when power is off.

To access the Start menu, drag your mouse over the bottom of the display.

To Shut Down Using a Mouse or the Touch Screen

  1. From the Start menu, select Shut Down to display the Shut Down Windows dialog box.

  2. Click the drop-down list button located beneath the What do you want the computer to do? prompt.

  3. Choose ClosedShut down from the list.

  4. Click OK to perform the action.

To Safely Shut Down without Using a Mouse

Configure the instrument so that you can choose what to do when the power button is briefly pressed:

  1. From the Windows task bar, click Start > Control Panel.

  2. From the Category View of the Control Panel, select Performance and Maintenance.

  3. Under Pick a Control Panel Icon, select Power Options.

  4. Click the Advanced tab on the Power Options Properties dialog box.

  5. Under Power buttons, select Ask me what to do.

  6. Click Apply > OK.

  7. Close the Performance and Maintenance dialog box.

  8. The next time the Power button is pressed, a dialog box will ask What do you want the computer to do? Use the PXB front panel Tab and Enter keys to navigate through the list.

  9. Select Shut Down.

If you cannot operate the mouse or keypad, shut down the PXB by pressing and holding the Power button for at least four seconds. However, repeated shut downs in this manner may damage the hard drive. Learn more about Preventing Hard Disk Drive Problems.

Unplugging the PXB

Remove the power cord from the PXB only when the Power LED is yellow (in Shutdown mode). Removing the power cord while the LED is green may permanently damage the instrument. The LED will remain yellow for several seconds after the power cord has been removed.
