Using Remote Desktop Connection

The following section describes procedures for Windows XP. Refer to the Windows 7 Help and Support to perform equivalent operating system tasks under Windows 7.

The Windows 7 and Windows XP Remote Desktop Connection allows you to control and interact with the PXB from a remote computer, as though you were sitting in front of the instrument. Before the PXB can be controlled with a Remote Desktop Connection, it must be set up to allow the connection.

The Remote Desktop functionality is a Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows XP feature. The following information provides guidelines for using this feature with the PXB. For more information, refer to the Microsoft Windows Help and Support documentation. Over time, Windows functionality may change.

Setting Up the PXB

To perform this operation successfully, you must have Administrator level access to the PXB.

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Control Panel.

  2. Select Performance and Maintenance > System (Category view) or System (Classic view).

  1. Select the Remote Tab of the System Properties dialog.

  2. A warning message appears, informing you that it may be necessary to configure your internet connection sharing or personal firewall to permit Remote Desktop connections. If so, consult with your system administrator.

  3. In the Remote Desktop dialog box, check Allow users to connect remotely to this computer.

  4. To add users, click the Select Remote Users... and follow the on-screen instructions and then select OK.

Setting Up the Remote Computer

The procedure depends on whether the Remote Computer to be set up is running Windows XP, or another version of Microsoft Windows.

The following instructions relate to software provided by Microsoft Corporation. Agilent offers no warranty regarding the operation of such software. The procedure described here may be changed by Microsoft at some future time.

Initializing a Remote Desktop Session

After setting up both the PXB and the remote computer for Remote Desktop Connectivity, you are ready to start a Remote Desktop session. To initialize a remote desktop session you need to know the machine name and the IP address of the PXB. Refer to the System Information topic on how to obtain this information, if needed.

  1. Make sure the PXB Baseband Generator and Channel Emulator has been powered up and the PXB user interface has loaded.

  2. From the remote computer, click Start> All Programs > Accessories> Communications > Remote Desktop Connection.

  3. In the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box, enter the IP address of the PXB.

  4. Click Connect.

  5. Log in by entering the PXB’s user name and password. The default user name is instrument and the default password is measure4u (all lower case), but note that these parameters may have been changed by other users.

Only the current User or an Administrator can remotely log into the instrument. To see the current user of the PXB, press the Ctrl + Esc hardkeys on the instrument until you can view the current user name on the Start menu. If no one is currently logged into the instrument, any valid instrument user can remotely log in.

  1. The PXB display appears on the screen of the remote computer. Most of the PXB functions can be accessed using the remote computer’s keyboard and mouse. See also Front Panel Keycodes.
