Multimedia Service (MMS) Messages

The Multimedia Service (MMS) is a WAP based application running on a wireless network. MMS makes use of the Short Message Service provided by the wireless network to notify the mobile station when an MMS is available for it to download from a server. Otherwise, MMS messages operate just like any other data transfer in the wireless network.

The test set can be used as a component in a system to verify the MMS capability of a mobile station. Other components required for such a system may include:

It is worth noting that for MMS verification, the HTTP or GPIB interfaces to the test set are only used for the mobile terminated (MT) SMS message containing the MMS notification. If you originate an MMS from the mobile station to an external receiving entity, the SMS protocol stack in the test set and therefore, the interfaces accessing that stack are never used.

MMS using the HTTP Interface

The HTTP interface in the test set provides a full IP based end-to-end test solution for MMS.

The test set's IP data channels are used to send MMS messages between the mobile station and an MMS server on a LAN/WAN.

The MMS Notification is a mobile terminated SMS message. See HTTP Interface Configuration for Mobile Terminated SMS for information on external software requirements and test set configuration.

MMS using the GPIB Interface

Similar to SMS, an external controller must parse the MMS notification into the appropriate GPIB commands for interfacing with the test set. An external MMSC is also required to exchange the MMS messages with the mobile station.

The MMS Notification is a mobile terminated SMS message. See Mobile Terminated SMS (MT SMS)- Sending a Message to the Mobile Station for information on external software requirements and test set configuration.
