Welcome to the Keysight Add PXI Chassis Utility

The Keysight Add PXI Chassis utility allows you to specify your PXI chassis so that they will be displayed in the most useful way in Keysight Connection Expert.

The Keysight Instrument Discovery Service can automatically discover your PXI-1, PXIe, and AXIe modules and PCI-to-PCI bridges within your chassis, and Connection Expert can usually display an accurate picture of your chassis and modules (cards). However, if PXI-1 chassis are present or if PXIe chassis are not installed properly, the Discovery Service cannot determine automatically which PCI-to-PCI bridges correspond to which of those chassis, and therefore, Connection Expert cannot display an accurate picture of your PXI system. This utility allows you to specify that information manually so that Connection Expert can display your system accurately.

Who Should Use This Utility

This utility is helpful in optimizing Connection Expert's picture of PXI chassis and their modules.

  • If all of your PXI chassis are PXIe, then the chassis drivers will typically provide the information that Connection Expert needs to create a detailed picture of your PXI system, and you may not need the Add PXI Chassis utility. However, if Connection Expert does not correctly display your PXIe chassis for any reason, you can use the Add PXI Chassis utility to add them manually.
  • If you have one or more PXI-1 chassis, and you want a detailed and correct picture of your system in Connection Expert, then the Add PXI Chassis utility will help you.

The Add PXI Chassis utility is not needed for the correct operation of your PXI system, Connection Expert, or other Keysight IO Libraries Suite utilities. It simply improves the visualization of your system in Connection Expert, making it easier for you to configure, troubleshoot, and interact with your PXI instrumentation.

Add PXI Chassis Overview

Using the Add PXI Chassis utility, you can map PCI-to-PCI bridges to PCI bus segments within a chassis. This allows Connection Expert to determine which PXI modules are in which chassis, and to determine the location of each module within the chassis.

To do this, the Add PXI Chassis utility reads the PXI chassis description file. This file is installed as a required part of the support software for your chassis. The chassis description file includes descriptors for each bus segment, PCI-to-PCI bridge, and slot in the chassis. However, the chassis description file does not indicate which PCI-to-PCI bridge maps to which bus segment, and therefore, it does not provide a sufficient description of the chassis to allow Connection Expert to depict it accurately. The utility allows you to specify this missing information to build up a complete picture of the chassis and its modules.
