PSA Setup as ADC (Other Measurement Hardware)

The PSA link with 89600 VSA software is an Keysight 89600 product that combines the Keysight 89600 VSA software and PSA series spectrum analyzers. The 89600 software runs on a PC and connects to the PSA via a LAN Local Area Network: A communications network that serves users within a local geographical area, typically over distances of around 100m. Wireless LANs use wireless communicaitons to network devices so there is no need for data cabling. or USB interface. In this system, the PSA is the measurement hardware and must be configured as a Logical Instrument in an Analyzer Configuration. This topic includes setup and measurement information required to successfully make measurements using the PSA.

PSA system requirements

The 89600 VSA software supports these Keysight PSA models: E4440A, E4443A, E4445A, E4446A, E4447A and E4448A with option B7J (digital Demodulation hardware) and firmware version A.02.01 or later.

The 89600 VSA software supports the PSA series spectrum analyzer option 122 (80 MHz Megahertz: A unit of frequency equal to one million hertz or cycles per second. bandwidth digitizer) and option 140 (40 MHz bandwidth digitizer).

Not all PSA series spectrum analyzers support option 122 or option 140.

GPIB/LAN/USB Setup

Instructions for configuring these interfaces are in the Software Installation Guide.

The highest performance interface is a USB connection. Live Input-Output operations and recording transfers are noticeably faster.

Single-channel Measurement Setup Procedure

Custom Input Channel Configurations: When using the Input Channel Configuration dialog to specify or modify the input channel configuration mapping, only the VSA default set of channel configuration mappings are allowed; "invalid" channel configuration mappings are disallowed and the "OK" button is disabled "greyed out".

Hardware Setup and IO Configuration

Connect the PC to PSA interface, install the 89600 software and configure the IO interface, see the Software Installation Guide.

  1. Start the VSA and configure the Analyzer Configuration:
    1. Open the New Hardware Configuration dialog box (Utilities > Hardware > Configurations > Add button). Select the PSA from the list of Possible Logical Instrument and drag it to the Configuration window.
    2. If there is more than one PSA, select the specific PSA to be used for this configuration in step 2 of the New Hardware Configuration dialog box.

For a dual-channel measurement, select another PSA in step a and drag to the Configuration window. Repeat step b for the second PSA.

    3. In step 3, name the configuration.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Select this Analyzer Configuration as the Current Analyzer Configuration in the Configurations tab.
  2. Configure the Hardware parameters.

Input Extension parameters that are unique to 89600/PSA systems are listed in the Keysight PSA "PSA Hardware Configuration Parameters" topic. Review these parameters and set them as required for your specific application, see the Input Extensions topic.

  3. Configure the Measurement Setup parameters.

Measurement parameters that are unique to 89600/PSA systems are listed in the Keysight PSA ''PSA Measurement Setup Parameters" topic. Review these parameters and set as required for your specific application, see Measurement Setup topic.
