PXB Control of External Instruments

The PXB can control external instruments, such as signal generators, using LAN, the internal GPIB interface reconfigured as a controller, or by using a USB/GPIB interface converter.

View the following topics for information on configuring the PXB as system controller:.

Using LAN

The PXB can control external instruments over LAN using the IP addresses of the external instruments that you enter into the External Instrument Table in the PXB's user interface.

Using Internal GPIB Interface

The PXB can control external instruments using the GPIB interface by setting the PXB to be the system controller and then entering the GPIB addresses into the External Instrument Table in the PXB's user interface.

If the PXB internal GPIB interface is re-configured as a controller, the PXB cannot also be controlled using GPIB.

Setting the PXB as the System Controller

  1. On the PXB, click the Agilent IO Control Closedicon in the lower-right of the Windows desktop.

  2. Select Agilent Connection Expert from the popup menu.

  3. In the Connection Expert explorer pane, select the PXB's GPIB interface node. ClosedIllustration...

Using a USB to GPIB Interface

The PXB can control external instruments with its USB interface by using the Agilent 82357B USB/GPIB Interface Converter. With the USB/GPIB converter, the USB interface functions as a GPIB interface to the external instruments.

Installing the USB/GPIB Interface Converter

  1. Connect the USB side of the USB/GPIB cable (Agilent 82357B USB/GPIB Interface Converter) to one of the PXB's USB ports and the GPIB side to the external instrument's GPIB connector.

  2. On the PXB, ensure that Windows displays the Found New Hardware Wizard.

  1. Click Next until the wizard completes.

  2. If a second Found New Hardware Wizard appears, continue to click Next until that wizard completes as well.

These wizards place the installed USB drivers in the appropriate locations for Windows to recognize the device.

Entering the GPIB Addresses
