Tracking (5G NR/5G-Advanced)

The Tracking parameters determine the type(s) of timing compensation to be used in the demodulation.

Amplitude - When selected, the average amplitude of the subcarriers is tracked. This means that the average amplitude variation of the subcarriers is backed out of all subcarriers before they are used. If there is amplitude droop in the signal, this will cause the droop to be removed and ignored by the measurement. However, if there is no amplitude droop, this could make the measurement slightly less accurate because the tracking may try to compensate amplitude variation that is due to noise.

Phase - When selected, the average phase of the subcarriers is tracked. This means that average phase variation of the subcarriers is backed out of all subcarriers before they are used. This is normally needed for proper demodulation, to track frequency and phase drift in the signal.

Timing - When selected, the tracking algorithm attempts to compensate for variation in the symbol timing of the signal. This can be used to track offset or drift of the symbol clock frequency. However, if the symbol clock frequency is accurate, this could make the measurement slightly less accurate because the tracking may incorrectly interpret noise as timing variation.

Tracking Source - Determines what portion of the signal contributes to tracking.

RS - Tracking is based on the RS.

FR1 – DMRS of all active channels + PTRS (if there is PTRS)

FR2 – DMRS of all active channels + PTRS (if there is PTRS)

RS+Data - Tracking is based on the RS and Data.

FR1 – DMRS of all active channels + PTRS (if there is PTRS) + Data

FR2 – DMRS of all active channels + PTRS (if there is PTRS) + Data

3GPP - (default) Depending on the frequency range (FR1 or FR2), the 3GPP standard-based Phase Tracking Reference Signal (PTRS) is used as the tracking source. Phase tracking is the tracking type, and timing and amplitude tracking are not applied and cannot be selected. Tracking source of RS or RS+Data must be used to apply Amplitude and Timing.

FR1 – No tracking

FR2 – PTRS only (no DMRS)

If 3GPP Conformance Test is selected, tracking parameters are grayed out and 3GPP is automatically selected as the Tracking Source.
