Recovering from Firmware Problems

The following section describes procedures for Windows XP. Refer to the Windows 7 Help and Support to perform equivalent operating system tasks under Windows 7.

Firmware Problems

The Windows operating system loads and operates normally, but the PXB firmware does not operate as expected.

Reinstall the PXB Firmware

Remove Firmware
 

Remove the PXB firmware on your instrument using the following procedure:  

  1. Close the PXB user interface.

  2. On the Windows task bar, click Start, and then click Control Panel.

  3. From the Category View of the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs.

  4. Select the PXB firmware. (It will be titled ClosedAgilent N5106A PXB Baseband Generator and Channel Emulator.) Then click the Remove button.

     


     

  5. The InstallShield Wizard displays the following prompt: Do you want to remove the selected application and all of its features?

  6. Click Yes to remove the firmware, and then follow the InstallShield Wizard prompts.

  7. When the uninstall process is complete, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now, and then click the Finish button. (The instrument will reboot.)
     

Download Latest Firmware
 

  1. You can download the PXB firmware from the DVD that was shipped with your instrument. This was the revision of firmware available at the time that the instrument shipped from the factory. If needed, you can download the latest revision of the firmware from: www.agilent.com/find/PXB.

  1. Save the PXB firmware file to the D: drive of your instrument. (From My Computer, select the D: drive, click Save on the File Download dialog box that appears, and then click Save in the Save As dialog box.)
     

If your instrument does not have access to the Internet, you can obtain the latest PXB firmware using a computer that is connected to the Internet at www.agilent.com/find/PXB, Save the file to a USB memory device for transfer to your instrument.

  1. When the Download Complete dialog box appears, click the Close button.
     

Install the Firmware

  1. Locate the downloaded executable file on the D: drive of your PXB (or on the USB memory device).

  2. Double-click the file, and follow the InstallShield Wizard prompts to install the PXB firmware.

    Or to specify a user with administrator permissions, right-click the file, and select Run As from the menu. The ClosedRun As dialog box will appear. Select current user or specify a user.


     

To continue with the installation, you must remove the check from the box next to the following prompt: "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity".

 

  1. Select the OK button, then follow the prompts to install the PXB firmware.
     

To continue with the installation, you must accept the Agilent license agreement.

 

  1. When the InstallShield Wizard is finished installing the firmware, select "Yes, I want to restart my computer".

  2. Click the Finish button. Your instrument will reboot, the firmware will be saved to the following file:C:\<Program Files for Win XP><Program Files (x86) for Win 7>\Agilent\PXB. Two icons, PXB MIMO Receiver Tester and Simulation Mode - PXB MIMO Receiver Tester, are copied onto the desktop of your PXB. 

  3. If the results are not satisfactory, consider running the Error Checking and Disk Defragmenter Utilities.

  4. If the PXB operation is still not satisfactory, see Operating System Recovery.
