Microsoft Windows on the PXB

Agilent has modified and optimized the Microsoft Windows® XP operating system to work with the PXB firmware and control the hardware for the best instrument performance. In general, most Windows System settings (typically set through the Windows Control Panel) should not be modified by the user.

  • Do not modify or reconfigure the operating system.

  • Do not install a standard version of the Windows operating system on the PXB.

  • Do not change advanced performance settings or group policies.

  • Do not add, delete, or modify any HDD partitions.

  • Do not delete the Agilent user account.

  • Do not modify any of the Agilent Windows Registry entries.

  • Do not change the following Display Settings:

  • Screen Saver settings

  • The screen resolution, 1024 x 768

  • DPI setting from Normal size (96 DPI)

  • Do not remove installed fonts.

Installation of Third Party Software

The PXB operates in an open Windows environment, so you can install software on the instrument. However, installation of non-approved software may affect instrument performance. Agilent does not warrant the performance with non-approved software installed.

Windows Security

Anti Virus Software and Firewalls

There is no anti-virus software shipped with the instrument. It is recommended that you install your preferred anti-virus software if your instrument will be connected to the LAN, and spyware software if you connect to the internet. Contact your IT department for their recommendations.

The instrument is shipped with the Windows firewall enabled. Do not modify the default network settings; however, you may have to temporarily disable the firewall to install licenses on the PXB from a remote computer.

System Backup

A regular backup strategy should be implemented. When performing a backup, it is recommended that the data be stored on an external storage device connected to the network or one of the instrument's USB connectors.

Windows has a Backup utility that creates a copy of the information on your hard drive. In the event that the original data on your hard disk is accidentally erased or overwritten, or becomes inaccessible because of a hard disk malfunction, you can use the copy to restore your lost or damaged data. For more information on this utility, refer to the Microsoft Windows Help and Support documentation.

Single and Double-click Option

By default, Windows allows a double-click method of launching icons. When using the touch screen, it may be easier to launch icons using the single-click method. To revert to single-clicking:

  1. Minimize the PXB user interface.

  2. Click Start, and then click My Computer.

  3. Click Tools, then click Folder Options.

  4. On the General tab (default), under Click items as follows, click ClosedSingle-click to open an item (point to select).

  5. Click Apply, then OK.

Adding a Printer

Adding a printer should be done outside of the PXB user interface.

  1. Minimize the PXB user interface.

  2. On the Windows task bar, click Start, then click Control Panel.

  3. From the Category View of the Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware.

  4. Under Pick a task..., select Add a printer to display the Add Printer Wizard.

  5. Follow the prompts to select your printer.

  6. The printer that you select is displayed on the Printers and Faxes window.

  7. Close the Printers and Faxes window.
