Hardware Startup Preferences

This topic describes how to specify the Preset mode "User Specified" Analyzer Configuration and Source Configuration Start Preference. To learn how to specify the other Startup Preferences - "Startup Modes", review the Startup Preferences Dialog Box topic.

You use the Startup Preferences "Preset" mode to specify a User Specified VSA startup Hardware configuration. The "Preset" Startup Mode group of parameters include:

Startup Preference - Preset mode:

Analyzer Configuration - Preset mode "User Specified" Startup Preference

Source Configuration - Preset mode "User Specified" Startup Preference

Startup Preferences are not reset by any of the Preset commands.

Analyzer Configuration - Preset mode "User Specified" Startup Preference

Initial VSA Startup Analyzer Hardware Configuration

The 89600 VSA software requires a minimum of one valid measurement Analyzer Configuration, either real or simulated hardware. When the VSA is started for the first time after software installation, the VSA will attempt to connect to all real hardware that has a VSA IO interface connection (the discovered analyzer hardware is listed the Hardware Discovered Instruments tab). The VSA will create a best fit "analyzer1 " configuration based on the type of available discovered measurement hardware. When no real hardware is discovered, the VSA will create a simulated hardware "Analyzer1" configuration. The "Analyzer1" configuration is selected as the default current measurement analyzer configuration.

Specifying the Preset mode "User Specified" Analyzer Hardware Startup Configuration

When Startup Preferences - "Preset" Startup mode is selected, each time the 89600 VSA software is started after the initial startup, the VSA performs the following steps to determine the "User Specified" analyzer startup hardware configuration. The startup analyzer configuration is determined by the Startup Preferences - Preset Startup Mode parameter settings.

  1. Determines what the Preset Startup Mode - Hardware to Use setting is, either "Last Used" or "User Specified".
    1. Last Used:   When Last Used is specified, the VSA startup analyzer configuration uses the last selected analyzer hardware that was selected when the VSA was last closed.
    2. User Specified:  When User Specified is selected, the VSA startup analyzer configuration uses the specified "Analyzer Configuration Name:" analyzer configuration regardless of what analyzer configuration was selected when the VSA was closed.
  2. Missing Hardware: When some, but not all, of the startup analyzer configuration hardware is not available (not discovered) at startup, the VSA will attempt to replace the missing hardware with the first discovered matching hardware found in the Analyzer Configurations list. The replacement hardware can be either real or simulated hardware.
  3. No Hardware found: When none of the startup analyzer configuration hardware is available (not discovered) at startup, the VSA will create an analyzer configuration using either 1) other available real hardware or 2) simulated hardware (same process as the initial VSA startup configuration process).

Source Configuration = Preset mode "User Specified" Startup Preference

Initial VSA Startup Source Hardware Configuration

Unlike Analyzer Configuration startup, the VSA dose not require a Source Configuration at startup, however, there must be at least one source configuration to enable the Source menu features

Specifying the Preset mode "User Specified" Analyzer Hardware Startup Configuration

When Startup Preferences - "Preset" Startup mode is selected, each time the 89600 VSA software is started, the VSA performs the following steps to determine the "User Specified" source startup hardware configuration. The startup source configuration is determined by the Startup Preferences - Preset Startup Mode parameter settings.

In all startup configurations, the source "RF Radio Frequency: A generic term for radio-based technologies, operating between the Low Frequency range (30k Hz) and the Extra High Frequency range (300 GHz). ON/OFF" is OFF (Source Control "RF on" is cleared).

  1. Determines what the Preset Startup Mode - Hardware to Use setting is, either "Last Used" or "User Specified".
    1. Last Used:   When Last Used is specified, the VSA startup source configuration uses the last selected source configuration that was selected when the VSA was last closed. Source setup includes these Source Control settings; signal frequency/amplitude settings and the source "Enable" state. If the source parameters cannot be set to the Last Used configuration, the source is set to the "Preset All" state.
    2. User Specified:  When User Specified is selected, the VSA startup source configuration uses the specified "Source Configuration Name:" source configuration regardless of what source configuration was selected when the VSA was closed. If the source parameters cannot be set to the User Specified configuration, the source is set to the "Preset All" state.
  2. No Hardware found: When the startup source configuration hardware is not available (not discovered) at startup, the Source configuration is set to "None" and the other source parameters are set to the Preset All values..
