Removable Hard Drive

A removable hard disk is designed for instruments that are used in a secure environment. Because the hard disk is easily removed from the instrument, you can protect any sensitive data.

On the N1000A only one hard disk is provided. Remove the hard disk before returning the N1000A to Keysight for calibration. Keysight does not need the hard drive to perform the calibration, because the calibration data is stored on an internal EPROM and not on the hard disk.

On an 86100D-090, factory calibration data is stored on the hard drive. Because of this the 86100D-090 has two identical, swapable hard disks and one hard disk must be returned installed in the instrument to Keysight for factory calibrations. When shipped from the factory, both hard disks include identical operating system, applications, factory calibration, and licensing files.

Both drive C and drive D (USER) are located on the hard disk. Drive C contains the following items:

  • Operating system
  • FlexDCA application
  • Any factory installed or user installed applications
  • Application licenses, which are automatically backed up to drive D
  • Factory calibration data, which is automatically backed up to drive D. 86100D only

Drive D contains the following items:

  • User files including data files.
  • Backup of application licenses.
  • Backup of factory calibration data. 86100D only

Use standard anti-static precautions when handling removable hard disks to avoid damaging the disks.

To exchange 86100D removable hard disks

This procedure does not apply to N1000A instruments.

  1. Turn the instrument on.
  2. If the 86100D has been returned from Keysight with a new mainframe calibration, you must save a copy of the calibration file from the current hard disk. Later in this procedure, you will install this file on the secure hard disk.
    1. On the instrument, click Calibrate > All Calibrations. Click the Mainframe and Skew tab. Record the calibration date for use later in this procedure.
    2. Close the All Calibrations dialog.
    3. Click File > Exit to close the DCA application.
    4. From the Windows Start menu, click My Computer.
    5. Enter the path, c:\scope\cal, in the address line on the My Computer dialog. Then, press Enter to locate the file, framecal.dat. The folder, c:\scope\cal, is hidden and will not be shown if you browse for it.
    6. Copy the file, framecal.dat, to an external USB memory device.
  3. Turn off the instrument.
  4. Remove the screw that secures the hard disk to the instrument's rear panel.
  5. Using the handle, remove the hard disk.
  6. Install the alternate hard disk. Make sure that the hard disk is oriented so that the connector on the hard disk lines up with the connector in the mainframe.
  7. Secure the hard disk to the rear panel using the screw.
  8. If you saved the mainframe calibration file in Step 3, perform these steps:
    1. Turn on the instrument, and click File > Exit to close the DCA application.
    2. From the Windows Start menu, click My Computer.
    3. Locate the file, framecal.dat, that you copied to your external USB memory device.
    4. Copy this file and paste the file into the folder, c:\scope\cal. Locate the folder by entering the path, c:\scope\cal, in the My Computer dialog. Click OK to overwrite the current file.
    5. Turn the instrument off and then on again.
    6. Click Calibrate > All Calibrations. Click the Mainframe and Skew tab.
    7. Confirm that the displayed calibration date is the same date that you recorded in Step 3. Verify that the displayed status message reads "Current service mainframe timebase calibration is valid."
