Field Strength Measurements

To measure the strength of any signal transmitted through the air, an antenna must be connected to the FieldFox. The Field Strength feature allows you to enter the frequency response of the receiving antenna (the Antenna Factor) and associated cabling, and then have amplitude corrections automatically compensate the displayed trace for that response.

— View Corrections > View Corrections ON OFF Turn ON and OFF Yellow Trace - Antenna/Cable corrections. This is a composite of all cable/antenna corrections that are currently applied. Available as a useful visual aid, the zero “dB” level (no net correction) is mapped to appear at the –50 dBm on-screen level.

The following menu appears when any of the above Antenna or Cable softkeys are pressed:

—Antenna/Cable ON OFF Turn correction ON or OFF for this Antenna/Cable.

—Edit Antenna/Cable Edit an Antenna/Cable Correction table. See Using the Antenna/Cable Editor (below) for more information.

—New Create a new Antenna/Cable. See Using the Antenna/Cable Editor (below) for more information.

—Save Antenna/Cable Save the modified Antenna/Cable to a file on the specified Storage Device.

—Recall Antenna/Cable Read an existing Antenna/Cable file from the specified Storage Device.

—Storage Device Choose from: Internal, USB, SD. Learn more about these selections in “Set File Type and Select Device” on page 919.

When finished, press Back to return to the previous menu.

Using the Antenna/Cable Editor

To learn more, refer to Chapter 9, “SA (Spectrum Analyzer) Mode (Option 233–Mixed Analyzers).” and to “Using the Antenna/Cable Editor” on page 171.

Using Mapping

Channel Scanner mode has indoor and outdoor mapping capability. Refer to Chapter 16, “Indoor and Outdoor Mapping – Option 352 (Requires Spectrum Analyzer Mode (Option 233), and GPS Receiver (Option 307)).”

Using Extrapolation Factor

Extrapolation factor is a correction factor that is applied as an offset to channel power results. Whatever positive or negative value is set will be added to the channel power results. The setting is in dB, and if channel power results are in a linear unit form, the extrapolation factor will be applied before the channel power is converted to those units. There is no annotation on screen to indicate the extrapolation factor, but it will be logged when making a recording as part of the header metadata in the *.csv recording log file.

The Extrapolation Factor softkey is located here:

—Press Scale/Amptd > More > Corrections > More > Extrap... Factor

To edit, enter a negative or positive value in dB (Default == 0, Maximum == 100, Minimum == –100).

Learn more, refer to “Creating and Importing *.csv Limit Line Files” on page 841.

Using the Uncertainty List

—To open the Uncertainty Table: Press Mode > More > Channel Scanner > Cal 5 > Uncertainty List.

To edit the Uncertainty List table click the right side column.

—To save Uncertainty List table values:

1.Press Save Recall Uncertainty List > Save Uncertainty List

2.Input filename

3.Press Done.

Using Resolution Bandwidth Tradeoff (Res BW Tradeoff)

This feature controls the resolution bandwidth for the current measurement.

To use this feature, press BW 2 > Res BW Tradeoff then choose from the following:

—High Sensitivity – Use this setting for greatest accuracy (Res BW == 1500).

—Medium – This is the default setting (Res BW == 450).

—Speed – When you want the fastest possible measurement (Res BW == 150).

03-NOTE

In EMF Custom List scan mode, the Res BW Tradeoff feature will be deactivated and switched to manual mode. Users will input these values manually in the EMF Custom List Table.
