Establishing a Connection with the UE

Establishing a Connection with the UE

NOTE
The Call Limit State must be OFF for any random access procedure, such as Location Update or test set origination (Paging), to be successful.

Test Set-Originated Connection

Before originating a call from the test set to the UE, specify what type of service you want to establish using the Paging Service setting. If Paging Service is set to RB Test Mode , you must also set Channel Type to the appropriate setting.

The UE can be paged using either an IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) or TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity).

To page the UE using its IMSI, set CS Paging Identity Type to IMSI . If you know the UE's IMSI, you can enter it under Paging IMSI ( CALL:PAGing:IMSI[:SELected] ) and proceed directly to originating a call even if the UE has not registered. Otherwise, you must wait for the UE to report its IMSI upon registering with the test set (see Performing a Location Update (CS Domain Registration) ).

To page the UE using a TMSI, the UE must first be assigned a TMSI during the Location Update procedure (see TMSI Assignment and Performing a Location Update (CS Domain Registration) ). You must then set CS Paging Identity Type to TMSI , then originate a call from the test set.

To originate a call from the test set, select Originate Call or send the CALL:ORIGinate[:AUTO] command.

The PICH contents are initially set to all zeroes in all paging indicators ("no page"). Once call origination is initiated, all of the page indicators in each valid access frame are set to all ones indicating a page. The valid access frames occur at times specified by the DRX Cycle Length (CN Domain) . Once the UE has responded to the page the paging indicators return to "no page".

For the lab application only, for circuit-switched services, you may choose to set Calling Party Number Inclusion to Include and specify a Calling Party Number for display on the UE's screen (see Calling Party Number Parameters ).

UE-Originated Connection

The Paging Service setting does not apply to UE-originated connections. When the UE originates a connection, the test set establishes the type of service requested by the UE. Current Service Type indicates the type of service established.

If you want the UE to originate the connection using a TMSI in its RRC Connection Request message, the test set must first assign a TMSI to the UE during the Location Update procedure (see TMSI Assignment and Performing a Location Update (CS Domain Registration) ).

For the lab application only, the Called Party Number indicates the number dialed into the UE when establishing the call.

Connection Status

The connection status is displayed at all times at the bottom of the front panel screens and is available via GPIB query (see Active Cell Connection State ).
