Starting with firmware release A.06.90, 86100D Compatibility mode is no longer being actively tested and supported.

The 86116C optical/electrical plug-in module incorporates a 45 GHz to 70 GHz optical measurement channel and an 80 GHz electrical channel. Standard modules require 86100D firmware revision A.07.00 and above. Option 040 or Option 025 modules require instrument firmware revision A.08.00 and above.

Select the reference receiver or unfiltered bandwidth using the channel configuration dialog. The reference receivers are measured to conform to key industry specifications for transmitter compliance testing. Since the reference receiver is inserted in the measurement channel by a repeatable microwave switch, measurement repeatability is maximized and time wasted by manually inserting and removing the filter is minimized.

The minimum required firmware versions for this module is 86116C, standard (A.07.00), 86116C-025 (A.08.00), and 86116C-040 (A.08.00).

This module is compatible with the following 86100D configurations Standard (Opt. 040, 041, and 025 only), Compatibility, and Legacy.

The optical channel is calibrated at the wavelengths listed in the following table to provide both accurate display of the received optical waveform in optical power units and measurement of the signal's average power. A user optical channel calibration provides for consistent accuracy at any wavelength between 1480 nm to 1620 nm and 1300 to 1330 nm using an optical source and a precision optical power meter.

Optical Channel Calibrated Wavelengths
Module Option Calibrated Wavelength Reference Receivers Unfiltered Bandwidth Setting
040 1300 nm and 1620 nm (default setting) 39.813 GBd
43.018 GBd
55, 60, and 65 GHz
025 1300 nm (default setting) and 1620 nm 17.0 GBd
25.8 GBd
27.7 GBd
40 GHz
Without 025 and 040 1550 nm 39.813 GBd
43.018 GBd
40, 45, and 65 GHz

The optical and electrical channels have reduced bandwidth settings for improved noise performance. The electrical channel provides up to 80 GHz of bandwidth for:

  • performing measurements on tributary electrical signals
  • evaluating receiver performance in transceiver testing
  • measurements with Keysight Technologies' wide range of external optical receivers
  • general purpose measurements

Use the module's front-panel knobs to adjust the vertical scale and the offset of the waveform.

As with all microwave connectors, take extreme care to protect the 1.85 mm input connector. Torque forces in excess of 5 in-lbs (0.57 N-M) and any shear or axial forces on the 1.85 mm input connector must be avoided. Use Keysight torque wrench part number 8710-1582. Always use two wrenches when connecting or disconnecting cables or devices from the 1.85 mm connector. Use one wrench on the 1.85 mm connector and the other wrench on the cable (adapter, attenuator, or DUT) attached to connector. If you over-torque the RF connector, the connector may unscrew from the remote head. This will require service. If a connector loosens from the remote head, contact an Keysight service center for repair.

Option IRC

Option IRC provides optical channel System Impulse Response Correction (SIRC) measurement and data files to provide an ideal channel response. SIRC data can be applied in the System Impulse Response Correction dialog box when the 86100D is in Standard or Compatibility configuration. The SIRC correction data feature is a digital filter that is used to:

  • Improve the response of module reference filters to more closely match an ideal receiver.
  • Enable non-standard reference receiver rates or bandwidths.
  • Increase the bandwidth of the channel by up to 50%.
  • Ensures that an eye diagram will look identical between different modules.

SIRC correction data is unique to a specific 86116C's serial number. The data can be purchased with new modules or purchased separately for your existing modules. Purchasing data for an existing module requires that the module be returned to Keysight Technologies. SIRC data is downloaded from Keysight.com. To order SIRC data, contact your Keysight representative or visit http://www.keysight.com/Find/FlexDCA.
